At Figi Jezi we help our community grow by propagating seeds of faith and spiritual guidance as well as propagating new plants in our gardens and in our community from various sources, including seeds, cuttings, and other plant parts. Both the seeds of faith as well as the plant seeds are used to build a good foundation for the Transformation Center, our Community, Haiti and its people. We have various programs that help us succeed at growing our community through means of propagation including but not limited to our core group classes/bible studies, community outreach and activities (see outreach), the learn and grow classes for kids, agriculture classes for adults, the community gardens and lastly our community meal program.
Every week at the Transformation Center we start with a Sunday School class for the children in the community whose families do not have the opportunity to attend a regular church service. In class the kids bang on their bucket drums, sing songs of praise and dance in between periods of prayer and lessons taught by Teacher Telly and Bob. Then throughout the week our programs sing and rejoice at the start of every activity. We gather together in groups where we fellowship and learn lessons of God's agape love and grace. Most recently, we hosted a praise and worship service where eleven people committed their lives to Christ and were baptized on the spot.
The Learn and Grow class was the first of our education classes and is still a big hit with our youth. Every week Teacher Telly, Andy and Bob read stories from the bible while also incorporating teaching basic agriculture. The kids can then make the comparison as they learn to grow their own plants while also growing in Christ. Once our seedlings are ready, the kids choose whether they want to take their plants home to share with their families or transplant them into the community gardens here at the Transformation Center in order to watch them grow and flourish.
The adult agriculture education is the newest class in the works and is also part of our Propagation program. This class is being organized and taught by Instructor Tito with Pat as the assistant, will be held on Mondays and Fridays, and has a duration of six months. It will take the students outside of the classroom and into the Figi Jezi community gardens as well as into their own future garden locations where they will be exploring the unlimited opportunities including valuable information about soil erosion, nutrients, mulching, planting, seed propagation, cutting, layering, grafting, division, budding, harvesting ect.
Beautifully situated on campus at the Figi Jezi Community Transformation Center is our garden which has been rapidly expanding. In the garden we have mature banana trees as well as coconut, orange, lemon, avocado and many more growing. Each season we utilize the space to propagate a variety of different plants that our community members will graze through during harvest filling their pals. We have harvested things like sweet potatoes, green onions, corn, sugar cane and most recently a towns favorite, casava (aka: Yuka). Members of our community enjoy post-harvest as well when they can stock up on plant remnants which allow them to propagate their personal gardens. Our community chef explores the gardens regularly for additional fruits, vegetables, spices and/or seasonings to enhance the meals served.
Haiti has been crippled by soaring food prices, inflation and food insecurities. This has left one in five Haitian children suffering from malnourishment and some degree of muscle wasting and/or growth stunting. Community meals provide beneficial nutrients but also a sense of belonging where we can tell stories, process our day, pray and laugh together transforming our community in so many ways. Figi Jezi’s Community Kitchen provides various meals, snacks, water, juice and life-saving nourishment for our employees, groups, medical patients, athletes and community members at the Community Transformation Center. By the grace of God, as the demand has increased, we have started expanding our gardens and the feeding programs to meet the needs of the community.
