At Figi Jezi we use every interaction with our community not only as a way to minister to them but to educate them in various ways as well. With the lack of available opportunities our community members are always happy and eager to learn. We host various classes throughout the week for both young and old including but not limited to bible studies, computer classes, sewing classes, English tutoring, and agriculture classes all taught by our amazing teachers and coaches. Classes always start with a song of praise and prayer and end with juice and laughter.
Our computer classes are ran Monday-Thursday, can hold up to 40 people a day and are ran by two phenomenal Instructors, Andy and Dieu-seul. We use Smart Box Technology which is pre-loaded with thousands of self paced learning modules in English, Spanish and French as well as Khan academy, Wikipedia and biblical curriculum. Our students, both young and old have expressed their interest in researching new topics as well as looking up their current school curriculum in order to advance their understanding.
One of the community favorites is the sewing class which meets every Tuesday and Thursday and is taught by Teacher Pat and assisted by Tito. It is enjoyed by both male and female, young and old. Our classmates love to show off their newest creations, stitched either by hand or machine depending on their current level of training. We have recently transitioned from practicing on sewing paper to using beautifully crafted materials that everyone can admire giving them a strong sense of accomplishment. Pending supplies, we are hopeful to open this class up four days a week for the long list of people waiting for openings. Until then our main instructor Pat, is available at the Transformation Center daily, repairing school and work uniforms for our community.
Learning another language opens up many opportunities for our community members and we are honored to host additional tutoring sessions for our English learners. For most, this is their only opportunity to practice proper pronunciation with native English speakers. Throughout the tutoring sessions we practice many skills such as hearing, recognition, pronunciation and writing. We also utilize multiple techniques such as reading books, songs, reviews, role plays, games, 1:1 conversations, movies ect. The class favorites are the Jenga game which has phrases written on each block both in English and Creole as well as a good ole' traditional game of Jeopardy. Our learners tend to love a good competition.
The adult agriculture education is the newest class in the works and is also part of our Propagation program. This class is being organized and taught by Instructor Tito with Pat as the assistant, will be held on Mondays and Fridays, and has a duration of six months. It will take the students outside of the classroom and into the Figi Jezi community gardens as well as into their own future garden locations where they will be exploring the unlimited opportunities including valuable information about soil erosion, nutrients, mulching, planting, seed propagation, cutting, layering, grafting, division, budding, harvesting ect.
The Learn and Grow class was the first of our education classes and is still a big hit with our youth. Every week Teacher Telly, Andy and Bob read stories from the bible while also incorporating teaching basic agriculture. The kids can then make the comparison as they learn to grow their own plants while also growing in Christ. Once our seedlings are ready the kids choose whether they want to take their plants home to share with their families or transplant them into the community gardens here at the Transformation Center in order to watch them grow and flourish.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve on our learning programs.
