At Figi Jezi, our mission is to provide assistance to those in need. We believe that everyone deserves access to basic necessities and we work tirelessly to make this a reality. We have found that many in the community come to Tommy's Clinic for leg and foot related pain such as elephantiasis, lymphedema and mossy foot. So we started a healthy steps initiative to treat, manage pain and educate in this area. Additionally, we focus on leg wounds, diabetes and hypertension as these all are highly untreated in Haiti and can impede ones ability to ambulate. Our team of medical care professionals is growing as the need has increased.
Life in Haiti has daily challenges. We see patients in Tommy's Clinic that have been severely burned, bitten by dogs, toe amputations, venous, diabetic and arterial ulcers as well as many other wounds. As the need for medical care grows and the word continues to spread in the community, we have been preparing to ship another container full of healthcare supplies to aid in the care of each patient. We have set a day aside specifically for wound care patients where they can come and have their wounds tended to, bandaged and we can give them the care they need. Over the last year, we have cared for countless patients in this way, many of whom have come back and shared what a difference it has made in their daily lives, many of whom were sent away from the local clinics with no hope or treatment options, people who have not slept in weeks, getting sleep again.
In the clinic we are seeing many rare foot diseases and infections. Some whom have spent most of their lives barefoot. We have been researching and treating these patients in our newly added triage wing. Often these treatments require hours of therapy and compression that had previously occupied our clinic rooms and prevented us from seeing as many patients each day. With this addition of the triage room we are able to provide patients the longer care necessary to help alleviate pain and reduce swelling. We have additionally started caring for leg patients that have previously been placed on a waiting list due to lack of space, supplies and staff. However, as testimonies are being shared and the word spreads our list is growing and many are still waiting for these life transforming treatment.
We have partnered with some organizations in the US to bring blood pressure and blood sugar monitors to our clinic. We host clinics where patients are able to have both checked and then are treated and educated on ways to monitor each with healthy eating and active lifestyles. This has also been a great way to partner with local doctors and nurses in the community and provide healthcare education and life saving medications to our community.
Our walk in clinic is open 5 days a week. We treat even the littlest patients and mothers bring in their babies for everything from diaper rashes to malnutrition and physical therapy. The walk in clinics provide immediate care to patients who need care right away and no appointment is needed. So often, people will come with a burn emergency or a severe infection that requires immediate treatment. Many come on foot from miles away or have to find a ride to bring them to our clinic. Having this clinic open for many hours each day has helped us connect with more patients and provide quick and often life saving care.
For the patients who are unable to make it into the clinic but so desperately need care, we offer home visits. Our medical team takes extra steps to make sure our patients are following through with their treatments in the weeks and months after being seen at Tommy's Clinic. Often our wound care patients have difficulty getting to the clinic as they may not have access to a ride and walking is painful. We have been able to connect with the community by coming to patients homes when necessary and changing their dressings and providing medications.
Our team regularly brings the community together through health education. We have been able to bring awareness to many of the health crises that impact our community most and provide literature, education and often preventative measures. Our goal is to bring awareness to the issues that impact our community most and gather to work towards life changing and impactful solution as each healthcare crisis arises.
